The objective of this article is to give, from the point of view of a gold buyer, how gold chains are evaluated for making an offer
Summary:
A gold chain is a linear jewel made of interconnected gold links. Gold and silver chains have existed for thousands of years. The main component is the link. There are lots of types of gold chains, and mostly used as bracelets and necklaces. Gold chains can be hand or machine made.
History:
Jewelers have been manufacturing gold chains since back in the days of old Babylon and Egypt. So basically, gold and silver chains have existed for thousands of years. Gold chains have always been a way to display and carry wealth. Babylonians kings, Chinese Emperors, Russian Czars, Egyptian Pharaohs, European aristocrats, Walls Street bankers and all such people are all fond of gold chains. However, gold chains are not just good for flaunting wealth. Most often, and maybe why gold chains were invented, is that they are a good way to carry wealth. For example, common Somalis, carry heavy gold chains as a way of transporting their wealth all the time with them, wherever they go. If needed, they will sell the whole gold chain, or maybe just a link. In a chaotic place with no banks, minimum currency availability, and general social chaos, gold chains are extremely useful. On top of that, one can be naked and still carry gold chains. That is much harder to do with gold coins or currency.
Definition – What is a Gold Chain
A gold chain is a patterned, connected, and flexible, series of uniform repeating elements, that together form a linear, elongated form, that can be put in tension but not in compression. Each of the connecting elements is called a link. Regardless of its look, each link is ultimately a closed loop through which other links are passed. Links can be closed by soldering, welding or by pressure depending on the design. Most gold chains are use as part of necklaces, necklaces or bracelets, but have many other jewelry applications.
Types of Gold Chain
From the manufacturing point of view, there are two types of gold chain.
Handmade chains, and machine made gold chains. From the design point of view there are dozens of types of gold chains. The later is beyond this article.
Machine made gold chains are chains that are manufactured in larger volumes. They are designed such that the process is repetitive and can adequate for specialized machinery and tooling. Typical examples of machine made gold chain are Figaro, Rope, Loop, etc.
Handmade gold chains are unique gold jewels that are made on a one by one or low volume series. Typically, handmade gold chain designs are not adequate for mass production and require expert goldsmith’s craftsmanship.
