Large placer gold particles are hard to come back.  Even in the old days of the gold rush, large nuggets were rare.  Finding a wearable sized and shaped gold nugget is extremely hard.  Thus, this nugget, after being found on the river and made into jewelry, it is very old.  It has been suspended from a lot of necks, been to a lot of places, and seen all kinds of crazy things.  Chances are that, if this gold nugget pendant could speak, just for about anything, it would say “been there, done that”.

I bought this gold nugget the third week of December 2019.  The seller was an older lady that had widowed just about two years prior.  At that point, she had finally decided to sell her late husband’s jewelry and move on.   As a highly active gold buyer, I have bough plenty of gold from widows and widowers.  Typically, if the marriage had been good, it takes some time for the surviving spouse to sell the deceased spouse’s gold jewelry.

As per my conversation with the seller, her husband bought the gold nugget pendant at least 30 years ago and wore it most of time.  Thus, as you can see from the images, the nugget has a polished look. That is most likely because, for a least 30 years, plus a lot of time before, the nugget was rubbed against skin and fabric.  Another tell sign that the gold nugget pendant was worn a lot, is that the 14K chain loop on to the top has been eroded by chains (but does not replacement yet).  Of course, all of this is anecdotal and cannot be confirmed, but that is what I know about the gold nugget as far as its life as it been a pendant.  The seller was born and raise in Nevada, in one of those gold and silver mining towns.  So, the story at least possible and probable.

What I can tell with certainty, is how this gold nugget was formed by nature.   All gold deposits are formed similarly.

At some point in time, magma from deep in the earth’s crust flowed to the surface.  This magma, together with steam and gases, collected the gold particles previously dispersed in the earth.  As the magma cooled, the gold particles, already at high temperature or even melted, fused into larger chunks and solidified.

If this was in the mountains, eventually water and wind erosion exposed the magma formed mineral.  With time, gravity made the heavier mineral chunks roll down.  This rolling and colliding process broke the mineral into smaller and smaller pieces.  Thus, the mineral surrounding the gold started to fall off.

Eventually, the mineral, in the form of rocks chunks containing gold arrived at a stream.  Now, with the force of water and gravity, the mineral collided and tumbled further and further downstream.  Eventually most of mineral fell off, gold particles became exposed, or even bare.

Gold is one of the heaviest metals.  The heavier the particle, the sooner it will settle.  The reason is evident.  It takes much more energy to move larger gold particles than to move smaller ones.  In order to tumble down a 36-gram nugget, the stream needs to be very swift.  So, the nugget was tumbled in a fast-moving stream.  In the process, it became more rounded because of all the collisions.  However, gravity never fails, and eventually the nugget arrived at some sort of obstacle, crevasse or location where there was not enough energy in the stream to further carry it down river.  Given the size of this nugget, this was in a fast-moving steep creek in the mountains.  Eventually a prospector found it.

Given that it is cool looking good chunk of gold, the nugget somehow was saved from been melted.  Now it became jewelry.  Several people owned it.  Most likely only men wore this nugget.  Just look at the shape and size.  This is gold nugget pendant is not for girls.  Now I own this nugget.  Will you be the next owner of this amazing piece of manly jewelry?

If you want to buy this nugget, call me.  The nugget is wild, and the price is right.  If you are big on gold, you are going to love it.
